Externalizing the problem

Problem externalization is a way of thinking and talking in which the problem is separated from the person's identity.

Definicja

Externalizing the problem is related to narrative therapy and helps describe the difficulty as something the person is dealing with rather than what it is. Instead of "I'm lazy," you could say "avoidance took over in this situation." Such language reduces shame and opens space for action, but it should not be used to avoid responsibility.

Praktyka i życie

Name the problem like an external pattern, e.g. "perfectionism", "avoidance", "chaos". Describe when it appears, what it does, and how you can limit its impact.

Częste błędne rozumienie

It is a mistake to use externalization to take away responsibility. A common mistake is to give the problem power as if it were completely independent of the activity.
