Unlearning

Unlearning is the process of weakening an old pattern of reaction, belief or action and replacing it with a more appropriate way of functioning.

Definition

Unlearning does not mean erasing the experience from memory. More often, it involves reducing the automaticity of an old pattern, updating predictions, and practicing a new response in a repeated context. It takes time because old patterns were often reinforced by relief, reward, or protection from discomfort.

Practice and life

Choose one old pattern and write down: the stimulus, the old response, the old benefit, and the new response that produces the healthier outcome.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to expect that understanding alone will remove an old habit. The second mistake is to try to unlearn without preparing a replacement.
