Identification of emotions

Emotion identification is the recognition and naming of the current emotional state based on body signals, thoughts and context.

Definition

Naming emotions helps you move from vague arousal to more conscious contact with what is happening. It does not mean an immediate solution to the problem, but it organizes the experience and can support regulation. Research on affect labeling indicates that linguistic labeling of emotions can reduce emotional reactivity and facilitate a more conscious response.

Key ideas

  1. Nazywanie stanu
  2. Połączenie ciała, myśli i sytuacji
  3. Regulacja przez rozpoznanie

Practice and life

When tension occurs, write down three elements: a body signal, a thought, and a possible emotion. Use a simple sentence: "I feel X because Y is important to me."

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to look for the perfect emotion label or to treat naming an emotion as a complete regulation. A common mistake is confusing emotions with interpretation, e.g. "I feel like someone is disrespecting me" instead of "I feel angry and sad."

Questions for self-reflection

  • Jaką emocję najtrafniej opisuje moje obecne pobudzenie?
  • Co czuję w ciele, zanim nazwę emocję?
  • Jaka potrzeba lub wartość stoi za tą emocją?
