Attention deficit

Attention deficit is the difficulty in maintaining, directing or switching attention appropriately to the situation and goal.

Definition

Attention deficit may mean problems with maintaining concentration, organizing tasks, finishing activities or filtering distractions. The symptom itself is not yet a diagnosis of ADHD, because attention difficulties may also result from stress, insomnia, overload, anxiety, depression or an environment full of stimuli. A sound understanding requires looking at duration, severity, context, and impact on daily functioning.

Practice and life

For a week, note down moments when your attention slackens: time of day, task, sleep level, hunger, stress and the presence of a phone. Look for patterns before you label a problem as a permanent feature.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to automatically equate every distraction with ADHD. It is also wrong to moralize attention difficulties as laziness, without checking sleep, stress, environment and cognitive load.
