Mental hygiene

Mental hygiene is the regular maintenance of conditions that support emotional, cognitive and social well-being.

Definition

Mental hygiene includes prevention of overload, contact with emotions, regeneration, supportive relationships, limiting excess stimuli and seeking help when difficulties exceed the ability to cope on one's own. It does not mean a constant positive mood, but concern for mental functioning in everyday life.

Practice and life

Set up a minimum daily mental hygiene ritual: 10 minutes without screens, writing down your tension, and one conversation or activity that provides regulation.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to take care of your psyche only when a crisis occurs. Mental hygiene works best as daily prevention.
