Self-discipline

Self-discipline is the ability to maintain a chosen course of action despite changing emotions, temptations and momentary resistance.

Definition

Self-discipline is not just being strict with yourself. In its mature form, it combines a clear goal, structure, impulse regulation and environmental design so that action is possible even when motivation decreases. The most lasting self-discipline is based on a system rather than constant teeth-gritting.

Practice and life

Choose one behavior and set a minimum execution version for low energy days. Self-discipline should have an emergency version, not just an ideal one.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to equate self-discipline with self-punishment. It is also a mistake to build a plan that only works with high motivation.
