Executive functions

Executive functions are a set of cognitive processes that help you plan, inhibit impulses, switch attention, remember a goal, and direct action.

Definition

Executive functions include, but are not limited to: working memory, inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility. They are needed for organizing tasks, making decisions, self-control and long-term action. They can weaken under stress, fatigue, overload or lack of structure, so they are often supported by external planning and chaos reduction.

Key ideas

  1. Pamięć robocza
  2. Hamowanie impulsów
  3. Planowanie i elastyczność działania

Practice and life

For a larger task, break the goal into steps, set the order and write down the first move. Remove from your working memory what may be on your list or calendar.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to treat performance difficulties as laziness. It's also a mistake to rely solely on motivation instead of structure, reminders, and the environment.

Questions for self-reflection

  • Czy mam jasny pierwszy krok?
  • Jak mogę odciążyć pamięć roboczą?
