Functional behavior analysis

Functional behavior analysis is the study of what circumstances precede behavior, what it looks like, and what consequences maintain it.

Definition

Functional analysis focuses on the function of behavior, not just its form. The same symptom may have different functions: avoidance, gaining attention, regulating emotions, accessing a resource, or reducing tension. The ABC model helps organize antecedents, behavior and consequences so that the intervention can be better tailored.

Practice and life

When repeating behavior, write down: what happened before, what exactly I did and what happened after. Look for repeatable consistency that reinforces the pattern.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to judge behavior without analyzing the context. It is also wrong to assume one function for all similar behaviors.
