Boundary decisions

Boundary decisions are choices that determine what a person will protect, what he will not accept, and where his consent ends.

Definition

Boundary decisions are about protecting resources, values, health, time, relationships and responsibility. They may include refusing, changing conditions, leaving the situation, or clearly stating the consequences. It's a practical concept: it combines decisiveness, assertiveness and self-care, but should not be used as an excuse for rigidity or avoidance of dialogue.

Practice and life

Write one boundary as a decision: "I refuse to do X; if X happens again, I will do Y." Make sure Y is realistic and doable.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to set boundaries without being willing to accept the consequences. A common mistake is confusing boundaries with trying to control someone else's emotions.
