Attribution error
Attribution error is the tendency to overestimate a person's characteristics and underestimate the situation when explaining his or her behavior.
Definition
In the fundamental attribution error, the observer is too quick to attribute another person's behavior to his or her personality, intentions, or morals, and too little to take into account the pressures of the situation. This mechanism can worsen relationships because it creates simplified assessments: "he is like that" instead of "what could have influenced him?" Being aware of this error helps separate behavior from context.
Key ideas
- Przecenianie cech
- Niedocenianie sytuacji
- Ryzyko niesprawiedliwej oceny
Practice and life
Before judging someone's behavior, write down three possible situational factors that could have influenced it. Only then formulate a conclusion.
Common misunderstanding
It is a mistake to treat context as an excuse for everything. Taking the situation into account does not mean a lack of responsibility, but a more complete diagnosis.
Questions for self-reflection
- Jaką cechę przypisałem tej osobie?
- Jakie okoliczności mogły wpłynąć na jej zachowanie?
- Czy oceniam innych tą samą miarą, którą stosuję wobec siebie?
