Flow

Flow is a state of deep engagement in an activity in which attention, skill and challenge combine into fluid concentration.

Definition

The concept of flow describes the experience of full immersion in an activity, usually with a clear goal, ongoing feedback, and a balance between level of difficulty and competence. It is not simply relaxation or an escape from life, although it can be pleasant and absorbing. Flow promotes learning and creativity when the task is challenging but still manageable.

Practice and life

Choose a 45-minute task, set a clear goal, and remove distractions. Set the difficulty level to be challenging, but not beyond your current abilities.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to confuse flow with compulsive getting lost or avoiding problems. It is also a mistake to expect flow in tasks without a goal, feedback and a reasonable level of challenge.
