Concentration

Concentration is the ability to maintain attention on a selected task, stimulus or goal despite distractions.

Definition

Concentration requires selecting stimuli, controlling distractions and keeping the goal in mind. It is not a fixed state, but a resource susceptible to fatigue, stress, sleep, emotions and the environment. Good concentration often begins with removing excess stimuli.

Practice and life

Work in blocks of 25-50 minutes on one task, turn off notifications and write down on a piece of paper anything that tries to distract you.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to treat concentration solely as willpower. It is often more effective to design the environment than to fight against distractions.
