Unconscious assumptions

Unconscious assumptions are beliefs that are taken for granted even though they have not been consciously tested.

Definition

They influence interpretations, choices and reactions because they act as invisible rules. They may be about yourself, other people, money, work, relationships or the possibility of change. They are revealed when a person asks: "why do I assume it has to be this way?"

Practice and life

For the problem, write down three sentences starting with "I assume that...". Next to each one, add: How do I know this?

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to confuse assumption with fact. We often defend assumptions because they are part of our identity or old survival strategies.
