Purposefulness of action

Purposefulness of action is the orientation of behavior towards a specific result, meaning or value.

Definition

Purposeful action differs from accidental activity in that it has a direction, a selection criterion and the ability to evaluate the effect. In psychology, it is associated with goal-directed behavior, executive functions, and self-regulation. Not every action has to be as productive as possible - purposefulness can also mean resting, talking or stopping if they are consciously chosen.

Practice and life

Before starting a task, ask: what is it for, what effect will it have and when will I stop?

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to confuse purposefulness with continuous productivity. The second mistake is to act intensively, but detached from values and priorities.
