Cognitive chaos

Cognitive chaos is a condition in which excess information, conflicting stimuli, or a lack of structure make it difficult to think clearly.

Definition

This is a practical concept, close to cognitive overload and working memory load. It occurs when the mind tries to hold too many tasks, options, concerns or unfinished business at the same time. Cognitive chaos reduces the quality of decisions, increases impulsivity and promotes avoidance, therefore it requires an external structure: recording, prioritization and limiting stimuli.

Key ideas

  1. Przeciążenie pamięci roboczej
  2. Brak struktury
  3. Spadek jakości decyzji

Practice and life

Download your thoughts onto a piece of paper, group them into three categories: urgent, important, see you later, and then choose only one next step.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to try to solve the chaos in your head alone. A common mistake is adding more organizational tools instead of limiting the number of stimuli.
