Responsiveness

Responsiveness is the ability to notice another person's signals and respond to them adequately, with attention and respect.

Definition

Responsiveness is important in relationships, parenting, communication and teamwork. It does not mean fulfilling every request, but accurately recognizing a need, emotion or boundary and selecting a response to the situation. It supports a sense of security and trust in close relationships.

Practice and life

In a conversation, first name what you hear: a fact, an emotion and a need. Only then offer advice or a solution.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to confuse responsiveness with compliance. It is also a mistake to react to your own fear instead of the other person's real signal.
