Problem function

A problem function is the role a problem plays in a given system, behavior, or relationship, even if at the conscious level it appears to be merely an obstacle.

Definicja

Some problems persist because, in addition to costs, they provide short-term benefits: avoiding conflict, maintaining predictability, deferring risk, or protecting against shame. Analyzing the function of a problem does not mean justifying it, but understanding its sustaining mechanism. Only then can you design a solution that does not destroy the needs hidden beneath the problem.

Praktyka i życie

Ask the question: what does this problem allow me or the system to do, what does it avoid, and what need does it try to replace?

Częste błędne rozumienie

It is a mistake to treat the problem only as an enemy. The second mistake is to look for a solution without recognizing what stabilizes the current problem.
