Internalization is the process of adopting external norms, values, principles or judgments as one's own.

It can also be harmful when other people's expectations, critical voices or norms contrary to one's own well-being are internalized. In the theory of self-determination, it is important to distinguish between controlled subordination and a more autonomous assimilation of values.
