Cognitive assessment

Cognitive appraisal is the way a person interprets the significance of a situation for himself, his goals and resources.

Definition

Cognitive appraisal influences emotions, body reactions and the choice of action strategy. Whether a situation is perceived as a threat, loss, challenge, or neutral fact can change stress levels and behavior. It is not about distorting reality, but about checking whether the interpretation is accurate and useful.

Practice and life

For a stressful situation, write down three possible interpretations: a threat, a challenge and a neutral fact. Check which one best fits your data.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to accept the first interpretation as fact. The second mistake is to force a positive reformulation, without respect for the real risk.
