Unit of analysis
A unit of analysis is a selected element that we examine or describe as the primary point of reference in the analysis.
Definition
The unit of analysis may be a person, behavior, conversation, decision, day, project, group, or entire system. Its choice determines what data makes sense and what conclusions can be drawn. A poorly selected unit of analysis leads to chaos because we mix levels: e.g. we evaluate a person based on one behavior or a system based on one incident.

Practice and life
Before analyzing the problem, add: "I am analyzing: a person, behavior, situation, process or system?" Only then collect data.
Common misunderstanding
It is a mistake to change the unit of analysis while reasoning. A common mistake is to draw conclusions about personality from a single event.
