System limitations

System constraints are conditions, resources, rules, or dependencies that set real limits on possible actions.

Definition

In systems analysis, limitations show why certain solutions do not work despite good intentions. They may involve time, energy, money, knowledge, organizational structure, relationships or law. Recognizing them is not pessimism, but a condition for designing solutions that are in contact with reality.

Practice and life

Before your change plan, list five constraints: time, energy, money, competences and dependence on other people.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to ignore limitations in the name of motivation. The second mistake is to consider the limitation as a judgment instead of a design condition.
