A synapse is a place of communication between neurons or between a neuron and an effector cell, where a signal is transmitted chemically or electrically.

Synapse enable the flow of information in the nervous system. At chemical synapses, the impulse leads to the release of neurotransmitters that affect the receptors of the next cell. The synapse is not just a "cable", but a dynamic site of neuronal regulation, learning and plasticity.
