Neurochemistry studies the chemicals and molecular processes involved in the functioning of the nervous system.

Includes neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, receptors, enzymes and communication processes between nerve cells. It is sometimes oversimplified in popular descriptions, e.g. "dopamine is happiness." In fact, these substances perform many functions that depend on the site, receptors and context.
