Utility

Usability is the degree to which a tool, idea or solution actually helps achieve a goal in a given context.

Definition

Usability is not the same as elegance, ambition or theoretical correctness. A useful solution works for a specific person, problem and environment. It can be simple, imperfect and temporary if it allows you to move things forward without excessive cost.

Practice and life

When solving a solution, ask: who does it help, in what situation, at what cost and how will we know if it works?

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to judge a solution only by whether it sounds smart. It is also a mistake to ignore the user and the terms of use.
