Disinhibition

Disinhibition is the weakening of control over an impulse, emotion or behavior, which makes the reaction appear faster and less appropriate to the situation.

Definition

Disinhibition may occur in various contexts: under the influence of alcohol, strong emotions, fatigue, neurological damage or self-regulation disorders. It is not one symptom with one cause. In practice, it means that the inhibitory mechanisms do not stop the reaction early enough.

Practice and life

Identify the situations in which you most often lose your brakes: time of day, emotion, people, substances, fatigue. Look for a pattern, not just a fault.

Common misunderstanding

It is a mistake to justify every behavior as disinhibition. It is also a mistake to ignore a sudden change in behavior, which may require specialist consultation.
