Psychological needs

Psychological needs are the basic conditions for internal well-being, motivation and healthy functioning.

Definition

In the theory of self-determination, the needs for autonomy, competence and relationality are particularly important. Satisfying them supports motivation, learning and well-being, while chronic blocking may increase tension, withdrawal or compensation. In practice, it is worth distinguishing between a need and a strategy to meet it.

Key ideas

  1. Autonomy, competence, relationality
  2. Relationship with motivation
  3. Need versus strategy

Practice and life

With a strong emotion, ask: "What need is being violated here?" and list three different strategies for satisfying it.

Common misconceptions

It is a mistake to confuse needs with immediate impulses. A common mistake is sticking to one strategy even though the same need can be met differently. > Not every whim is a need, but every unnoticed need seeks an outlet. > — Guru Element

Questions for self-reflection

  • What need does this emotion refer to?
