Cognitive flexibility

Cognitive flexibility is the ability to change perspective, strategy or way of thinking when a situation requires updating.

Definition

Cognitive flexibility allows you to switch between tasks, adapt your strategy to feedback and go beyond one interpretation scheme. It does not mean chaos or a lack of rules, but the ability to modify an approach when the old one no longer works. It is important in learning, problem solving and emotion regulation.

Key ideas

  1. Change of strategy
  2. Belief update
  3. Switching perspectives

Practice and life

When you get stuck, write down three alternative explanations for the situation and two other strategies. Test one for a short time instead of defending the old plan.

Common misconceptions

It is a mistake to confuse flexibility with lack of consistency. It is also a mistake to stick to a strategy just because it once worked. > Flexibility of mind is a miracle in itself in today's world. > — Guru Element

Questions for self-reflection

  • Does my strategy fit the current situation?
  • What other perspective can I take?
  • What do I need to update after new data?
