Deduction
Deduction is reasoning in which a logical conclusion regarding a specific case is derived from general premises.
Definition
In deduction, the correctness of the conclusion depends on the structure of the reasoning and the truth of the premises. If the premises are true and the reasoning is logically valid, the conclusion should follow from them. Deduction is useful in analysis, problem diagnosis and organizing assumptions, but it does not replace collecting data about reality.
Practice and life
Write your reasoning in the form: if A and B are true, then C follows. Then check separately whether A and B are actually true.
Common misconceptions
It is a mistake to confuse deduction with intuition. A common fallacy is a logically correct conclusion based on false or incomplete premises.
